1 the standard signal upgrade is not very good the images are blurry We have a Series 2 Tivo I think we ll have to upgrade to their new Premier because I can see getting headaches watching our shows with the standard signal Our Mitsubishi 52525 DLP we purchased in 2005 was much better at the standard signal upgrade
2 Apparently we had a mis understanding I spoke with a local sales person about this TV before purchasing it from Amazon I thought it was wi fi ready it is NOT One of the main reasons we purchased this TV was to use the Netflix downloads but now we have to go buy an expensive adaptor/router to get the wi fi signal to the TV we cannot just use a cord as the router is in a completely different area of the house
I m pretty sure we ll keep the TV we popped in The Dark Knight on Blu Ray it looked incredible it is just a disappointment that we ll have to shell out several hundred more dollars to take full advantage of the features this TV offers

Pros The blur motion control Bravia Sync and input switching are great The menus for calibration of the picture if you have a THX calibration disk are simply very easy Watching Blu Ray movies or playing PS 3 games on this are awe inspiring incredible details rich blacks no motion glitches Hooking a Nintendo Wii up to this TV via component cable was a nice surprise too in terms of picture quality and motion tracking So many inputs you will be hard pressed to fill them up
Cons The sound of the TV speakers requires you to have a separate receiver/speaker array system The speakers are rather tinny sounding with no bass The quality of this HDTV like most on the market requires that you learn how to calibrate the TV to THX or another standard Otherwise you are not getting all the quality that the TV is capable of The HDMI input does not communicate well with the current Verizon FiOS Motorola HD QIP 71001 set top box The picture flickers intermittently goes to green screen or goes to black depending upon the channel selected Switching the set top box to feed this Sony using component cables solves the issue but it is disappointing that neither Sony Motorola nor Verizon want to take ownership of this HDMI problem
Overall the picture quality of this TV blew away other 120 Hz LCD HDTV s both priced at this level even 1 000 more To get a better picture if you know how to calibrate an HDTV you would have to spend several thousand dollars more Even then the amount you will spend versus perceptible picture quality improvement is not really worth the bang for the buck IMHO I would recommend this TV with the above 3 caveats

Sony BRAVIA BX 300 Series 32 Inch LCD TV Black >> Great tv I received this bravia on 5/3 and I believe it to be better than my other bravia 32inch KDL from the turning on interface and the menus the only problem I have with it was it only had two hdmi inputs in the back not on the side as the KDL I still recommend it though I plug my tower with vga and the quality is very smooth with my ps3 and hdmi blu rays look awesome >> Bad Composite Video Inputs I bought three 32 inch LCD TVs in one week and returned the first two because of identical video input problems I felt uncomfortable returning the first two TVs but I m glad I did because I ended up with a high quality problem free TV in the end The experience also gave me some good insight to write this review
The problem with the Sony BRAVIA BX 300 Series model KDL 32BX300 was when I connected a DVD player with composite video cables red/white/yellow and played a DVD there were alternating horizontal stripes of discoloration on the screen These stripes appeared on some DVDs but not all The stripes of discoloration were most visible in scenes with a lot of blue for example blue sky scenes and the stripes alternated yellow and blue about every half inch in the sky I did a lot of troubleshooting including plugging the TV and the DVD player directly into the wall outlet and disconnecting the TV cable to ensure there was no signal interference from the TV cable or a surge protector I also connected a second brand of DVD player to the TV with the composite video cables and also saw the stripes of discoloration Both of these DVD players worked perfectly in the other two TVs in our house one a Panasonic plasma and the other a tube TV Aside from the video input problems the picture quality of the KDL 32BX300 with a cable signal was grainy and the lowest quality of the three new TVs that I bought this week compared Also the remote was cheap and the menu layouts were poor
When I called Sony customer support the representative was rude and told me that since the stripes didn t appear with a cable signal then the problem was with the DVD players After I explained to him that the two DVD players worked perfectly in two other TVs including a one year old plasma so it must be a problem with the video inputs he said just return the TV to the retailer
The other TV that I returned for this same problem was a Visio VO320E I tried two different DVD players in the Visio one with a composite cable connection and one with an S video connection the Sony didn t have an S video input and the stripes of discoloration were visible with both DVD players The picture quality was better on the Visio VO320E than on the Sony
The third TV I bought was a Panasonic TC L32X2 This TV just came on the market in March 2010 What a relief to find that the DVD video inputs didn t induce any stripes of discoloration on the screen Better yet the picture quality from both the DVD and cable inputs were far sharper than the other two TVs
One thing I think I can conclude from this experience is that manufacturers of the Sony and Visio TVs are the same or the defective video inputs came from the same manufacturer >> Super sharp picture at a great price I have only had this TV for a week but I have to say that I love it The contrast is excellent the sound is decent and the price was right at 400 I purchased this model for a very small game room The sharpness of the picture was my top priority because we are sitting so close to it I am very happy with clarity that the BX300 provides

Sony BRAVIA V Series KDL 40V5100 40 Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV >> Can We Just Go Back to the Trinitron In the past I have always had good luck with Sony TV s and during the 1990 s I had a Sony 32 Trinitron that provided a picture and sound that was superb in every respect the state of the art for the time It was with some disappointment therefore that I found that the TV industry s venture into the Brave New World of HD has saddled an entire generation of TV viewers with substandard sets that are in many respects far worse than the non HD sets they have replaced The Sony Bravia series is unfortunately no exception to this rule
The Sony Bravia KDL 40V5100 is best when viewing live sports events If you like to watch golf basketball and football and little else this is the TV for you Unfortunately the Bravia does not do as well in other situations Here are some of the flaws I have noticed
1 Picture problems The only settings that produce an acceptable picture are in the Vivid range Turning off the automatic contrast enhancer helps but the picture quality in most cases is still unacceptable At its best the picture is sharp and crisp giving great definition but even on many HD channels there is considerable degradation of picture quality with feathering and blurring quite noticeable
The less said about non HD channels the better The picture performance in non HD is abysmal with dark scenes turning black and light scenes whiting out
Similarly no matter what the player non HD DVDs upconvert poorly Using an ordinary non HD TV to play DVDs is a far better choice and an important one if like me you have a large collection of these now obsolete items
Moreover for anyone who has a multi system non HD TV set i e one that can play PAL and SECAM in addition to the inferior NTSC format used in the USA the picture quality for DVDs is so much better than on the Sony Bravia that there is really no comparison
In addition of course the Sony Bravia series has significant fading problems when viewed from the side and it is grossly inferior in this respect to Plasma and normal non HD TV sets
2 Screen The high gloss screen and plastic borders are totally unsuited to TV viewing A Matte screen and non glare borders would provide far more comfortable viewing in all but a darkened theater situation Any light source reflects off the screen and is worse than for a regular non HD TV In this respect Plasma TVs are vastly superior
3 Sound The sound is OK most of the time but there are periodic and inexplicable dropouts as well as hissing and popping problems that are not helped by changing the connections to HDMI There is something fundamentally wrong with the sound system on the Sony 40V5100 and Sony better fix it fast if they don t want a class action lawsuit Sound levels also vary markedly from channel to channel for reasons that are not immediately apparent
4 Controls The remote control is awkward to operate with switching from TV to DVD to PC taking up to 15 seconds Similarly it takes about 15 seconds for the TV to turn on once you have pressed the on button for a sufficiently long time to persuade the little green power on light to finally put in an appearance When changing channels the lengthy handshake procedure results in a two second delay from HD to HD and five seconds from HD to non HD and often a green screen before the next channel displays Once again why am I supposed to view this as an improvement over a regular non HD TV where channel changing is virtually instantaneous
In sum the Sony Bravia series is a big disappointment Its one indisputable advantage is that in comparison to Plasmas and non HD TVs it is very light so when the time comes to throw it away it won t present a heavy lifting problem I still have a couple of serviceable Sony WEGA non HD TV s They aren t as good as the old Trinitrons from the 1990 s but at least they are tolerable I m going to see how long I can keep them going The Sony Bravia is going too right out the door
I have a request for anyone reading this review please let me know when someone finally produces a decent HDTV As far as I can tell no one has accomplished this feat quite yet

Sony BRAVIA EX308 Series KDL 22EX308 22 Inch 720p LCD HDTV Black >> exactly what I was looking for I bought this TV for my bedroom I wanted something small that didn t take up too much space but more importantly I wanted the internal wireless so I could stream Netflix since I don t have a cable connection in my room
The TV was extremely easy to put together and set up however I couldn t get the regitration number from the TV that I needed in order to start streaming internet/Netflix The TV kept saying I was connected to my wireless but I wasn t able to connet to internet I called Sony and was on the phone with them for over two hours They had no idea what was wrong and told me my internet was too slow and I needed to call my provider yet I have high speed internet through cable and have no problems with speed on my computer
I played with it for a few hours and turns out I just needed to move the TV a little closer to my doorway the modem/router is in the living room 20ft away I m not really sure why those few feet made a difference but they did Just note if you buy this TV it does need to be within a certain distance of your router
I am now streaming Netflix like a pro I think the interface is fine but I have never seen the Roku interface so I have nothing to compare it to It sometimes takes a while to load movies and will freeze up in the middle but I think it is because it is too far away from the router still
I wish this product could stream the internet without needing to be so close to the router Otherwise the picture and sound are great and I think the TV is a great value for being a Sony and having the internal internet >> Built in Netflix streamer but not Roku quality yet I bought this because it had everything built in including Netflix and Wi Fi adapter
NETFLIX The user interface in general sucks for Netflix I have to get right up to the screen to see the movie choices in my Instant play list I much prefer using the Roku Netflix interface which I have in another room I am having to choose the movie in one room with the Roku then go back and reselect it on the SONY to watch it in the other room Why Because this screen crams 18 Netflix movie images on the screen at the same time to choose from but each image is so small you can t really see it very well to make a decent choice If you know the Roku system where you scroll through the movies with only about 6 images on the screen at one time with the center image ENLARGED for easy selection but with this Sony screen everything is much smaller too many small images to be practical Also you cannot grade the Netflix movie with stars I have to go back to my Roku screen to do that
Why am I going on about the Netflix integration Because you can get a great screen and a Roku box for the same money as this SONY cost I thought this combined unit would be better for Netflix but it s not However in the future this screen s software could be updated by Sony as they make improvements so I m hoping they will soon update their interface to something more useable because quite honestly as I said above it sucks right now
WIFI Somebody else mentioned problems with the wifi so here s my experience too The included WiFi adapter connects to a USB port on the side of the screen There s an extension lead supplied that lets you position the adapter for a better reception Problem is that no matter where you position it even though my WiFi router is less than 20 ft away and high up the Sony still has difficulty at times and it will stop dead in the middle of a Netflix movie FORCING you to pick up the remote and press a button to Retry the connection possibly 4 or 5 times for the movie to continue No such problem with the Roku box that s running on the same router There s no way to connect a third party WiFi antenna to the adapter either so I think wifi reception is something that Sony needs to improve
If the wifi crashes and will not restart then you have lost your position in the movie the screen doesn t remember where you were and when you go back to that Netflix movie it will only start again from the beginning
HDTV It receives digital HDTV broadcasts with an antena not supplied I got 45 channels in Miami mostly spanish with about 11 English channels The setup allows you to switch OFF all the channels that you don t want to see then the channel selector just flips through the channels that are left
ALARM I set it to switch itself on every morning like an alarm clock to wake me up Works great BUT if you unplug the unit from the power socket you lose the alarm setting you need to reprogram it
SOUND The sound quality through its speakers is excellent
PICTURE Out of the box the picture seemed too dark so I went into the settings and brightened it up it s much better now
SUMMARY Great screen but I really hope SONY improves their Netflix User Interface and wifi adapter
Otherwise I recommend going for a cheaper screen and separate Roku box for the same money or even less

I use this in my room and is the 3rd LCD screen that we own 1st is an older XBR 52 1080p 120hz Its a nice tv but a bit dated We have had it for a few years This ex500 i think gets a better picture quality when watching HD rated Bluray or HD TV The other TV is a generic 32 720p and 60hz So needless to say this is a huge upgrade over that
Watching regular TV is ok Its not great quality as SD channels come in a bit blury Its not to say its bad and if you only watch SD Channels it wont really make a difference to you but when you have HD channels to compare it to the SD is kinda crud
PS3 is beautiful The 1080p looks amazing and there is no tv lag or blur in the games I play a wide range of games From frantic FPS to RPGS and the graphics all are beautiful
PC also synced flawlessly The videocard i was using was a bit low end so it wasnt the greatest transition to full screen and the computer lagged a bit trying to process for such a large aspect ratio I am getting a newer pc soon though with a video card that can handle the high end aspect ratios
USB video sadly its one feature i havent been able to test Since I have a PS3 Ive been using that to watch video off of a USB and also all my videos are avi while the TV only supports mpg off of the USB stick This was slightly disappointing However the TV immediately recognized the USB and played music and images off of it with no problem
All in all this TV is great for the price It has a lot of high end features and you can get a decent deal on one >> Quality for the price This is the second Sony LCD HDTV I have My other is the KDL 40Z4100 Sony provides high quality for the price
I use rabbit ears to get over the air signals and it pulls in all the stations available The picture is crisp and in watching a DVD up converted of The Dark Knight I noticed no loss of resolution during fast scenes I haven t had a chance to watch a Blu Ray on it yet I have a Sony Blu Ray player so it syncs nicely
The downside Well when you turn it on you get a chime sound The plus is that is is fast in going between channels although the favorites only hold the last 10 channels and the remote leaves a lot to be desired Other than the number buttons the buttons are a bit small and crowded Not sure why it has an ON button on the back side as well as in the expected place The remote for my KDL 40Z4100 is far better
The sound is all right nothing to really write home about
I have it in a room where the light levels will change quite a bit and so far have not noticed any issues There is a light sensor that is supposed to help adjust the picture to ambient light levels One can select different picture settings movie general etc but I haven t found a need to select those

Sony BRAVIA EX 500 Series 32 Inch LCD TV Black >> Sony BRAVIA EX 500 Series 32 Inch LCD TV Black My first LCD TV Well I ve had my new TV for about a month now and it works as advertised Excellent picture and vary fast refresh rate so no smearing during high rates of picture movement I ve played with most of the settings and right this moment I m just using the standard display I have used the 15 pin D connection to display HULU from my laptop and it works very well I ve also played with the sound settings and after using steady sound and clear voice went back to just standard settings Music is very negatively impacted by using these setting to the point that movies especially have a very flat sound to them making it feel like your watching a pre relase take before the music background was added
One thing that most people not having had a wide screen TV before should be aware of that without getting the HD feed you are losing a good portion of the reason for getting a TV of this type I was using normal cable connection with just a standard feed and the TV display looked like crap most of the time There were a few stations that came in Ok like the PBS type who mostly displayed HD as a normal course of programming but most of the channels you had to make up your mind if you wanted to watch bloated people or use other settings that either cut part of the picture out or use a standard setting that gave you a small 4 3 screen While this might seem like a very basic problem to people who have had HDTV s for a long time this was my first one I ve had and the results were not good I solved this issue by going to Direct TV and getting their HD and DVR package A world of difference I was able to crank the display up to it s full 1080p with outstanding results I ve been with Time Warner cable for about 25 years and was tired of it s programming anyway so it presented a good excuse to finally get away from them We shall see how this works out This isn t a plug for any satellite company just the one that seemed to offer the best package in my area at this time
This TV is not internet ready but with the ability of the set top box I have and Tversity media server software free version on my PC and laptop I am able to look at videos and pictures without having to connect directly to the TV You do need though a set top box that can connect to the internet so it would be mostly the higher end ones offered by the company you chose I moved my modem and router and sat them right on top of the set top box It s a big rats nest of power cables now but I m thinking about making some enclosure to hid most of the mess This is one of those things where one thing leads to another Getting a HDTV is a big change in your viewing experience and it causes some changes in how you set up things
One other issue that has nothing to do with the TV as such but has effected both my wife and me is the extra work your eyes go through watching a wider screen It really gives the eyes a work out so expect to have very tired eyes if you watch TV for an extended time One other issue was how bright the TV is at night When a mostly white screen pops up it really can make you squint This TV has a low light setting so it sets the brightness down at night but it still can hurt you eyes sometimes There is a custom setting where you can play with all this picture settings but after spending a week or so trying to get it just right I went back to the standard setting I might revisit this as I become more familiar with the whole setup I have now Going to HD feed seems to also helped the whole experience and made it much better So it s like anything else garbage in garbage out You need an HD feed to really take advantage of this HDTV set
I have noticed that on this size TV that the speakers are not the best It really shows up in the music channels and doesn t seem to have much dynamic range and has a little in a barrel sound sometimes Another thing that you should have if possible is a 5 1 speaker system to take advantage of what this TV can put out for a sound signal Our room is really too small and I ll be sticking with the speakers built in right now I have noticed that the steady sound still doesn t do too much to cut down on the very loud commercials I m hoping the law that is going to be passed if it isn t already to limit sound spikes in commercials will take care of this issue one can always dream Like I had mentioned before with both steady sound and clear voice music is badly impacted but voices are easier to hear
The smallness of the room also dictated the selection of the screen size I was pushing for a 37 inch but my wife didn t want something peeking over the window sill women what can you do LOL It did turn out to be a good choice though as anything bigger and we would really have worked hard to catch all the action going on in the whole screen I m only about 7 or 8 feet from the screen so it covers most of my forward field of view which is very sufficient for us
So to sum it all up get this HDTV if you want a real HD experience and you have a small room that you need to fit a wide screen TV into Plus remember you really need a HD feed to take advantage of a TV like this

Con it takes about 5 seconds to turn on but that s not a big deal to me since I am usually setting up the blueray player PS3 or PC when I pressed the On button Volume on it is okay but if you want better surround sound then you know you need to buy an audio system for it
Overall Sony didn t let me down as I have compare this TV along with other models sizes and stats of different brands >> This seems like the first review for this tv on the whole internet So I bought this tv without reading a single review because there wasn t any I wanted specifically a 32 120hz set because it is going to be in a small room any bigger would have been overkill and this fit the bill
I upgraded from a Samsung 26 720p LN26A330 which I had no complaints at all about but really wanted 1080p since this is hooked up to a home theatre/gaming pc and I could use the extra resolution I compared these tv s side by side after getting the sony and was really surprised how much better the sony s picture was I was using 720p on both for fair comparison playing identical sources
Pros Very bright picture which is good for the day time Blu Rays do look amazing just adjust the settings to personal preference True Cinema 24p mode does seem to play movies at true 24p I set the htpc output to 24hz to accomplish this Motionflow works really nicely on some blu rays definitely not for all movies though but I actually do prefer it over True Cinema 24p in a lot of cases PC games look very good with motionflow turned on especially FPS s Motionflow makes 60fps look like 120fps and you can tell a difference in how clear and smooth everything is Extremely energy efficient uses only 40w in power saving mode 75w normal mode this is better in both categories than my 26 samsung which amazed me
Cons Speakers on my old samsung might have been a little better its hard to tell for sure but its not a big difference Very minor I wish a single button could turn motionflow on and off instead of navigating menus
Overall I am really happy with this set If you like 24p true cinema and/or motionflow and are willing to pay a little extra I d recommend it If your not that concerned with those features I would probably get a less expensive 60hz set but I am glad I got this one
btw make sure you don t don t turn Cinemotion to auto1 if Motionflow is already on It gives movies a really strange effect like your hallucinating or something

Therefore when I review this TV I will be comparing it to the Vizio
Video The video is good and the 1080p which is as HD as you can get looks just as good as I saw on my previous television The standard definition could have looked better but it is very hard to rate standard definition once you have been spoiled by the appearance of HD One of the nice things about this television is how well it handles fast scenes Movement if very clear on this television I never thought my Vizio was bad with moving scenes but you definitely notice a difference in fast action scenes
Sound Personally I am not that concerned about sound If I really cared that much about maximizing my sound quality I would run out and purchase a theater system to handle that I own one but I don t use it because it isn t worth the extra power it takes However for the sony sound needed to be set to 60/100 to get to a volume I am comfortable with With my Vizio I could get the same at 30/100 So the Sony has a much weaker sound This bugs me don t ask me why but I like my Television to have a stronger sound and the Sony doesn t provide even if I would never go that high volumewise
Design I wanted to mention the design of the Sony as well The back of the sony consists of two component two HDMI and a VGA computer sound also an optical and outsound The side consists of 1 composite 2 HDMI and a usb which I will get into in a bit The back ports are facing back rather than facing down piano style For those of you who want a tv flush with the wall this will be inconvenient because you will need to leave space for the cables to plug in Personally I prefer this style since it is a lot easier to plug in cables than with the difficult piano style and my television is on a stand not a wallmount But I can see it being difficult for wall mount people The side ports are not really on the side more like on the backside They are completely obscured by the television and are only about an inch and a directional change away from the rest of the ports placed in a kind of tv cubby hole All of the ports are on the left side of the television if that is important to you All of the controls are on the right side I am very happy with the controls which include everything you need to control the television without the need for a remote like some TV s make you do
Inputs/Outputs I already mentioned them naturally the VGA computer sound allow you to hook a computer up and use this as a massive monitor I have not tested it but I guess it works fine The USB port is another cool function Supposedly you can plug flash media usb flash drives or flash cards in USB converters into the television and it can read and play the media It claims to be able to handle music photos and even video My previous television lacked this ability and I have yet to test it out However if it works like it claims that would be a great feature if you have guests and want to show someone something or you have downloaded video and want to show it on the TV without the work of converting and burning it
Personally I dislike how they are getting rid of composite The TV doesn t even have an s cable The composite is on the side rather than the back fortunately as I mentioned before it is in a cubby hole of sorts and you wont see any cable sticking out of the side Still if you have any composite device this forces it to the side and you can only have one without some kind of converter box I can t blame them too much HDMI is the future and soon even component will be out of style However for those of us with aging DVD players that still work fine we will have to consider upgrading to HDMI Although it is funny to me that composite is fazing out but they still give you a composite cable standard with any dvd player blue ray disk or game system purchase and force you to buy the HDMI or component with your own money
Menu I like to mention the menu because a lot of people don t The menu gives you some options although compared to my Vizio the options menu seems a little limited Either way it should be enough for most people If you are determined you will have enough choices to tweak the video to your liking I have a DVD Video Optimizer that allows me to set the TV to ideal conditions using images and tests but the video has been nice enough out of the box that I have not felt the need to do anything with it
Overall I enjoy the TV although it disappointed me a little in the sound department the menu and the input This is why I gave it a 4 stars It is a good television but when comparing it directly with my Vizio I didn t feel it was quite as good Still most people wouldn t notice or care about those small problems so I do recommend this television >> Absolutely No Regrets I ve owned this TV for about 2 months now and have watched many different formats on it including DVD s and Blu Ray streaming NetFlix over the air HD local channels and SD/HD cable I fall in love with the TV every time I watch something on it My wife can attest to the constant stream of wow s coming from my mouth while watching HD nature and travel shows Action flicks Awesome
As many of you have done I researched many different brands and models prior to making this purchase using the Internet and in person at local brick and mortar shops I ve always been a Sony fan and didn t hestitate long when I realized that I could have a 120 Hz Sony LDC TV of this size for less than 1000 This is one of the few major purchase that I ve ever made where there hasn t been any sort of buyer s remorse
The feature set is light compared to some of the newer models out there It doesn t have Internet apps built in it s 120 Hz versus 240 Hz and it s not an LED LCD As far as I m concerned most of those bells and whistles are unnecessary I picked up a 160 Sony Blu Ray player that covers the Internet streaming I really like the convenience of Bravia Sync integration between my different enabled components Definitely a cool feature
This review is for the picture right out of the box I am intending to calibrate it and can only imagine that the picture quality will be even better
One final note as far as sound goes I exclusively use external sound through my home theater system so in comparison of course the built in speakers sound really weak You ll have to draw your own conclusion in that department

I ll also admit that I was not smart enough to buy the extended warranty which you MUST do if you by a Sony because I was very disappointed and confused when Sony did not offer to help me more than they did For the cost of what it will cost to fix it I could now buy two new 46 Bravias
Again it s a great product but Sony s committment to the their customers is ridiculous Why pay the higher price when you re not getting better service Vizio here I come >> Excellent TV This is my first HDTV Saw it at a relative s house last winter and wanted one Got a great price Easy to install although I did purchase an a/v switch because of the number of devices hooked to the TV Excellent quality of picture sound and looks >> Sony Has History of BAD LCD s We bought a KCL 52XBR4 LCD TV in Feb 2008 As previously reported by others in Aug 2009 we experienced lines progressing to a black screen At that time we were told by a tech that it was a due to a bad LCD panel Worse when our installer contacted Sony he was told there was only a 12 month warranty when Sony had extended to 18 months Recall that Sony has you register your purchase so that you could be notified of issues like a warranty extension but of course this is only likely a ploy to sell your name since Sony chose not to notify anyone Since the cost of repairs approached that of a replacement we passed on the repair In researching a new TV we learned of the special extended warranty on the 46 in models and of numerous reports of similar problems in the 52 inch products Breaking through customer support we got to consumer affairs They insisted on a report from a Sony approved repair shop and proof of purchase 110 00 dollars later once again we we informed that the problem was a defective panel Two levels of customer affairs later Sony s response was we ll assist you with covering 25 of the parts Sony will not even refund the wasted 110 00 on the service call they insisted on The Sony approved repair tech and our installer both have said they have experienced similar responses from Sony but that a few customers have their entire repair cost on these 52 inch TV s covered fully Needless to say Sony is not a honorable company If you chose to avoid Sony products please note that Samsung is now strongly affiliated with Sony
FYI There is also a problem with an electronic module at the top of the these KDL XBR s The problem source can be differentiated by the fact that if the module is responsible the Sony menus are unaffected Sony also has a huge problem with their rear projection TV lamps melting the outside housing

The only thing I can gripe about is not having an ethernet port and only one USB port Yes it s a TV not a computer monitor but it wouldn t hurt Also the Ambient Sensor blows so I just leave it off

Pros Picture quality is great as a TV But as a monitor average quality not very clear even with a good performance video card My old 23 Samsung is still better Nice design this design looks more like a monitor than a TV
Cons No clock only a sleep timer The cheapest SONY TV remote I have ever seem I personally don t like the design at all especially the 2 rounded circle buttons for navigation special features and select enter too packed in that area and other area of the remote is too plain Ambient sensor is useless to me I have to keep it off Sony monitor auto off never works well with when using PC have turn off TV manually No direct PIP button on remote have to go in Tool menu then select At least button on the remote doesn t hurt
PIP users If you use this monitor/TV with your PC you might want to pay extra attention because you cannot use HDMI with PIP to watch TV channels Only in PC mode or VGA can be PIP with TV channels at the same time But there is not much option out there anyway

What I really find disappointing is that after only 2 years the TV has a major problem when warming up For upwards of 10 minutes on startup the screen appears distorted almost ghosted on the left side eventually the picture clears up and looks normal but this should not be happening Of course out of warranty My old RCA CRT lasted 11 years before problems

Sony Bravia XBR KDL 52XBR6 52 Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV >> Starting to lose its appeal I bought this TV in the last few days of 2008 when an attractive discount was offered if you also bought a Sony blu ray player It was a deal that I could not pass up It arrived in Jan 2009 and I have been for the most part thrilled with the unit The picture is excellent and the color is great
A few months ago my wife started asking about the vertical line down the right side of the screen I had trouble seeing it against a darker background but it was definitely there It s in about 3 inches from the right side running from top to bottom and it about 1/2 inch wide
I thought that it was the source that was no good and it would come and go Recently it has been happening more frequently and the line has gotten a little wider it s actually multiple close lines It shows up with the blu ray it showed up with my Comcast HD DVR and it now shows up with my DirecTV HD DVR HR 21 But it comes and goes without touching anything
I contacted Sony online who suggested that I change the socket that it is plugged into I have it on an expensive surge/power control unit The unit shows voltage and status and everything there is fine This is not a problem with the socket it s a problem with the panel I asked about warranty and unfortunately it s one year that s it
I looked on the web and found that someone else had the same problem with their same unit but their line is 3/4 inch in from the right whereas mine is about 3 inches
I thought that Sony was known for quality so this is a big surprise I don t recall ever having a problem with another TV before I was looking at a Sony laptop since I want all of this equipment to work together but this has changed my mind
If I were doing this again I would look at Panasonic or Samsung
I gave the low rating on picture quality because when the line appears it really annoys me If the frequency of appearance increases this is only going to get worse >> Sony up s the ante I have had this tv now for over a year and I must say I am still impressed This set replaced a 40XBR2 which I am loaning to my bro I wanted to go bigger and the idea of 120hz was appealing ever since I saw a demo of Spiderman 3 playing on a 120hz Sony Bravia almost a year prior For me the pq is outstanding I keep Motion enhancer on standard and it s excellent A lot of people falsely assume it s the 120hz that makes the pq look soap opera ish but it s actually the motion enhancer which can be turned off The 120hz is always on and has no negative effect on the pq at all The colors are excellent and the picture is smooth Watching Blu Ray films on this tv is a sight to behold it will make you a believer in movies again I game on this bad boy and it handles everything with ease My PS3 and 360 look outstanding and I never have to use the game mode except for when I play Rockband FPS with no lag The 4 HDMI ports and 2 Component makes this one tv that can handle all of your devices The sound is phenomenal as well it plenty loud and does the trick for those late nights when you don t want your surround sound going The menu system just like the PS3 and PSP is very easy to navigate There is a lot to love with this tv but there are a few negatives It like all LCD tv s may suffer from clouding and uneven back lighting if it does it should only appear in a very dark image and shouldn t be noticeable Mine is excellent in that regard and I have no issues with this My only wish would have been if they used the sort of glass bezel of my XBR2 that I loved Overall this is an amazing HDTV that handles the videogames and sports games watching the Laker s on this bad boy is a lot of fun It may be pricey but when it comes to quality and reliability Sony IMO cannot be beat >> Great TV but Warranty difficult to deal with I purchased this TV for about 2300 along with a free Sony Blu Ray BDS350 from Circuit City s going out of business sale in Jan 2009 The TV is great and I recommend it highly HD and blu ray blew me away I went back within the 30 day limit and bought Circuit City s 3 year warranty for 300 as I kept getting told that things can go wrong with these big LCD s I was told that the CC warranty covered more than the usual things and that they would often simply replace the defective TV with no hassle
On April 22 2009 I reported Mura clouding which had a flashlight effect from six points on the sides of the screen It doesn t show during TV viewing except during very dark scenes and became more annoying to me as time went on I first called the Circuit City warranty guys thinking the set might just get promptly replaced but no such luck They immediately turned me over to Sony saying the one year Sony warranty is in effect My receipt for the CC warranty shows it began at date of purchase and ends Jan 2012 so apparently in reality I bought a 2 year warranty not a 3 year and paid 300 Sony dispatched their repairman who came and looked it over on an early Sat morning when the TV was not warmed up enough for the problem to show He believed that and said he would come back He told me Sony needs proof of a problem and to try to get pics of it so not owning a camera I bought a drug store instant camera which did get sharp pics of the TV screen with or without flash But it just picked up the TV with its black screen with none of the white clouding showing on the snapshots The repairman thankfully did bring a real camera on his next visit took pics and left with the promise that Sony would call me in about 5 business days with the verdict By June 17 they still had not called so I called them and was informed that they did have a new back panel on back order and would call me for an appointment when it came in It might take weeks Then a few days later they called me because they had the part They promptly came and tried to install it taking ALL the guts out of the TV unplugging all the wiring inside it EVERYTHING down to the plain black frame itself then went to replace the panel but found they had ordered the wrong panel They put everything back together OK and I m still awaiting the correct replacement panel
I asked while they were working what if the new panel is the same way and they said then that s how it will have to be I guess So I think in that case I would try to go after the CC guys and threaten to make the warranty a disputed charge on my credit card unless they do something but we ll see
I ll update this review when I get the new panel
here is my update I got the correct new panel put in on 7/28/09 which is actually a substitute panel for the original which is no longer made It worked perfectly and gorgeously the first day and I thought my problems were over However by the second evening when the TV was very warmed up there was the same problem again that I had originally reported only with slightly different light shapes along the sides of the screen but just as severe as before So now will begin a new process of dealing with Sony and/or Circuit City Warranty people to perhaps install yet another panel get a replacement of the TV or get a refund of the original purchase price I love the TV better than all others I ve seen I just hate the problem If they will refund me though I will buy something else perhaps I guess plasma
8/7/09 I called Sony Customer Relations to inform them that the new panel did not work but before I could say anything the guy seemed unaware that the panel had been replaced and offered me a replacement of the same exact model 52 XBR6 but refurbished I then called Assurant Consumer Relations they have taken over Circuit City warranties and was run all around hell trying to talk to them about whether a replacement TV would cancel my Circuit City three year warranty First person we don t take care of that call contract sales I did they have nothing to do with this problem Consumer Relations is supposed to help you 2nd person No way will the warranty be in effect any more Are you crazy or something I tried once more 3rd person A very helpful experienced sounding guy No it shouldn t effect the warranty at all I only have to put a note on my computer that the MANUFACTURER is replacing it with the EXACT SAME MODEL and that I have reassured you the warranty is still in effect Sony had also said the same thing about their one year coverage So I called Sony back and agreed to the deal They will be delivering the new TV in several days The helpful guy at Assurant also mentioned that the refurbished TV is probably just part of a recall for a defective part which has now been fixed and thus it is probably not used but brand new This makes me hopeful as maybe if it was manufactured at an earlier time it could be a better model We ll see
8/21/09 The saga continues It s too bad that Sony isn t producing up to par as I ve heard the XBR9 has the same problem They replaced my TV with the refurbished new one and sure enough the same problem showed up within 24 hours Only a little worse since there is at least one splotch of white cloud even in the middle of the screen I don t think they can fix it A refund might be in order but it seems they will only give a partial to account for depreciation even though I first reported it within 90 days of purchase and it has taken me 4 months to get this far I m wishing I kept the first one with the new panel
9/09 Sony replaced my TV with another identical model this time it came with an older style but correct remote for this TV I guess that might mean it s one of the first 52XBR6 s to be manufactured There is NO MURA It is now November 17 2009 and still a good black screen with if I am precise the teeny tiniest bit of mura but no distraction at all Now I feel I finally lucked out Phew

So I presently do not use the radio because the channels are difficult to navigate nor do I use the Mp3 on this nor the surround sound Of course I m sorry I bought it want mine >> Terrible Sound Qualtiy Not recommended The sound quality of this unit is poor mostly because the bass response is so poor I m sticking with my 330 watt JVC mini system which sounds infinitely better for a hundred dollars less >> Great system for the price and performance offered I was able to set it up in no time at all and the included components worked flawlessly The wireless rear speakers open up all sorts of possibilities for placement need unobstructed path between the two wireless bases
A nice starter or smaller room system

Sony Bravia S Series KDL 26S3000 26 Inch 720p LCD HDTV >> Awesome Great TV and computer monitor HD channels look crisp Auto tune was easy I didn t mess with the settings much I sometimes flip the Light Sensor I turn it on when using it as a monitor otherwise it is too bright It has better resolution than the IBM X61 laptop I hook up to it My Windows Vista desktop looks cool when it fills up the full 26 inch widescreen I had to change one setting once to get the resolution set perfectly Good sound as well I rarely need to turn the volume above 33 35 and the max is 100
One of my buddies commented that he would be able to use this as a computer monitor from the couch which is 8 or 9 feet away Of course that would strain the eyes after not too long but the point is that a person with normal eyesight can read 12 point text on a 26 inch bravia screen from 9 feet away That s pretty good yes
The week after I got this in the mail smooth and quick delivery well packed I was at the MOMA Museum of Modern Art in New York One of the floors had a section of video and computer graphic art All the exhibits were using Sony Bravia TVs I m sure it was part of a sponsorship deal or something but another way of looking at it is that a group of folks i e professional video and graphic artists that one can expect to be very concerned with picture quality selected this LCD TV Naturally I took this as a sign from god >> If you can still find one BUY IT This model was recently discontinued I managed to find one for 650 delivered online from Beach Camera in NJ and it arrived this Tuesday I immediately ran to my local cable company office and traded in my old digital converter box for a Hi Def converter box I require a converter box because I subscribe to all of the Premium channels so although I could probably pick up many Hi Def channels without it I would loose the Premium channels
I did see the replacement model in a Circuit City and the picture was equally as gorgeous but does not have Surround Sound the speakers are half the wattage of this model and it lacks a number of other features Others have reviewed the new model on Amazon so you can easily read the differences
It has a gazzilon options in terms of picture I find new things every day I have the cable box connected with an HDMI cable which I had to buy since my cable company only provides composite cables with the Hi Def box and HDMI is infinitely better having now used both
I am absolutely thrilled with this set I am a long time Sony fan anyway
If you are in the market for a 26 Hi Def and can still get your hands on this model DO IT You will not be sorry
The sound is quite good The base is more stable than many of the others that I looked at I live in an earthquake prone area so stability is an important issue for me The case is simple and attractive It is not gaudy or shiney I did not want a high gloss finish anyway It will not be the dust magnet that the high gloss ones are
I have it in my bedroom which is a small room When I want larger sound like for the many Premium cable movies that I watch I play the TV through my Bose Wave Radio which has wonderful sound for a small room However just for listening to news or whatever I use the set s speakers which are much larger than the new model and sound just fine in surround mode I also like the fact that it has a stereo mini plug headphone jack as I tend to be a late night person and don t want to disturb my neighbors
I had connected my standard DVD Player but have since gotten a Sony Uploading DVD Player and the picture looks wonderful For my discs I also play the sound through my Bose Wave which has an additional Multimedia Pedestal allowing me to connect the audio of 3 components in my case TV DVD and Laser Disc Given that I have a small bedroom with no real space for a stereo system with free standing speakers the Bose Wave which has a very small foot print is an excellent compromise
I need to emphasize that this model is a far superior set to all the others that I looked at in 26
My final words to you are BUY IT >> The SONY Bravia KDL26S3000 The SONY BRAVIA KDL 26S3000 is fine except for the POWER on/off capacity It doesn t want to turn ON in response to the remote or the POWER button on the machine It especially does not want to turn off The POWER button must be held down for 30 40 seconds on both the remote or the button on the machine It also needs a full minute to warm up before you can change to another channel
